Mijn doel is niet om mensen een mening op te laten leggen noch is het mijn doel om met onwetende en haatvolle amazigh.nl-leden in discussie te gaan (discussie met deze mensen is bij voorbaat zinloos wegens hun vooringenomenheid). Nee, deze topic is enkel en alleen om de andere kant van de verhaal te laten horen. En zoals gewoonlijk laat ik het oordeel over aan de lezer....>

In een informatiebrief die gisteren vrij is gegeven door de Sahraoui organisatie Comite pour la defense du droit a l'autodetermination pour la peuple du Sahara Occidentale (CODAPSO) wordt wederom duidelijk gemaakt dat de Marokkaanse overheid niet alleen de Polisario bestrijdt, maar tevens ook Sahraoui mensenrechtenactivisten en gewone Sahraoui burgers....>

De Saharawis sites zitten vol leugens:

Paar maanden geleden zeiden ze dat Haider huisarrest was en niet mocht reizen, maar in onafhankelijke media was te lezen dat Haider in Spanje zat.

Paar maanden geleden kwam een Saharwi om bij een busongeluk, de Saharwis zites zeiden dat hij vermoord was.

Een paar maanden geleden zeiden ze dat Marokko achter coup in Mauretanie zat.

Dat Marokkaanse militairen meisjes in Niger hadden misbruikt, maar het was leugen en zelf de regering van Niger ontkende het.

Een paar jaar geleden zeiden ze dat Saharawi op zee werden gestuurd door Marokko en daarna beschoten. In westerse media was te lezen dat dat allemaal lulkoek was..

Morocco "winning Sahara propaganda war"

afrol News, 23 May - International media are increasingly siding with the 1975 Moroccan annexation of Western Sahara, despite human rights violations that has left thousands Sahrawi population destitute in Algerian refugee camps. Pro-Sahrawi pressure groups demonstrate how Morocco slowly is winning the propaganda war.

Sahara activists, publishing news and analysis on the 'Western Sahara Info' blog, have tried to analyse why their part of the conflict seemingly is getting less attention in global media. In an analysis, they point to the "propaganda war" that has been going on between Moroccan authorities and the exiled government of Western Sahara, organised around the independence fighters Polisario Front.

Currently, reporting on the Western Sahara conflict is more and more based on Moroccan government propaganda, which links the Sahrawi government to terrorism, the activists note. Moroccan pressure groups had managed to plant rumours in Washington, indirectly linking the Sahrawi government to al Qaeda despite total absence of Islamic extremism among the Sahrawi population, they add.

"It should be noted that the Moroccan government during the last years has stepped up its propaganda war against the Sahrawis, spending large sums on lobbying particularly in the United States," the article read.

Three main sources of propaganda material are mentioned. These include materials from the Moroccan-America Centre for Policy (MACP) â€" a pressure group based in the US and financed by the Rabat regime - Maghreb Arabe Press (MAP), which is a Moroccan press agency controlled by persons close to the royal family; and finally Sahara Press service (SPS), a news agency controlled by Polisario and based in the Algerian refugee camps. Lately, MACP and MAP materials are widely quoted in the international press, while SPS materials are rarely used.

"Now, I am not saying the SPS is a much more reliable source than MAP or MACP. All three are propaganda outfits, spewing out press statements and communiqués in the hope of being picked up by some reputable broadcaster or furthered as an Internet newsblast," the analyst at 'Western Sahara Info' holds.

He further holds that journalism on Western Sahara often is based on picking press statement that fill up the foreign news section without balancing the information. In particular MACP markets its communiqués professionally, paying large amounts to have them distributed to journalists around the world through PR companies such as PRNewswire.

As an example, the renowned news agency Associated Press (AP) published an article a story of a man allegedly terrorised by Polisario, who flee the refugee camps. The man, who was sponsored by Moroccan authorities to go to the US, said there was no hope for Western Sahara under Polisario. In other stories, Sahrawis recounted their miseries about what happened if they were caught by Polisario trying to escape the refugees camps. Morocco for decades has tried to present the Sahrawi refugee camps in Algeria as concentration camps, where Polisario is holding the population detained, preventing them from leaving.

According to the analysis, the Moroccan government during the last years has stepped up its propaganda war against the Sahrawis, "spending large sums on lobbying particularly in the United States" ensuring that wealthy states turn their back on Western Sahara.

In January this year, also this media was manipulated by an MACP release distributed through PRNewswirer. afrol News soon thereafter apologised for having published an article about the Western Sahara conflict that was based on propaganda material planted by the Moroccan government, which linked the Sahrawi people to terrorism acts.

"Looking at how other mainstream media treat the Sahara issue, maybe we had no reason to apologise in January, but we were of course hurt in our pride having fallen victim for Moroccan propaganda for the first time,” comments afrol News chief editor Rainer Chr Hennig. "It is a petty that it is close to impossible to find non-propaganda sources to this conflict," he added, "and both sides are seriously lacking credibility in their statements and information."

Journalist Tsepiso Mncina, now covering the region for this media, notes that "efforts to resolve the Western Sahara conflict would be futile if the media continue to pay their attention on one side of the story." However, she adds, "reporting on Western Sahara requires knowledge and understanding of the region to maintain objectivity while at the same time giving out information."

Meanwhile, the 'Western Sahara Info' analysis has already triggered a wealth of comments by bloggers. Some hold that Spain â€" the ex-colonial power - is an exception, as media here remain well-informed about who is who in the conflict. Others blame Algeria for not aiding the Sahrawis sufficiently with funds and propaganda incentives. Algeria, contrary to Morocco, spends no significant resources on international propaganda.

Het is de plicht van "geidealiseerde mens" om de rechten van de onderdrukten te verdedigen. Maar het is op te merken dat we erg selectief zijn. Waarom niet de Tamil bijvoorbeeld.

Dat lijkt alleen maar zo voor de buitenwereld. Maar sinds ik me bezig houdt met de Sahara kwestie ben ik namelijk van mening dat de Isahraouien misbruikt worden door zowel de Marokkaanse overheid als de Algerijnse overheid om de Imazighen in beide landen tevreden te houden dan wel te onderdrukken. Het eeuwenoude verdeel-en-heerstactiek. Ik ben van mening dat als men zich hiervan bewust kan worden, ondanks de culturele verschillen tussen Isahraouien en Imazighen, dan kunnen we gezamelijk een stap voorwaarts maken wat betreft een betere verstandhouding tussen Imazighen en Isahraouien als volk en als onderdrukte minderheden en tegelijkertijd de macht van de centrale overheden / politiestaten van zowel Marokko als Algerije beetje bij beetje afbreken. Dus het feit dat ik voor de rechten van de onderdrukte Isahraouien op kom is indirect mijn bijdrage voor de Amazigh zaak (zie ook kwestie Ali Lmrabat, die sinds vorige maand werkloos is gemaakt door de Marokkaanse overheid).

Ik zal niemand tegenhouden die hier een topic wil openen voor de onderdrukte Tamils / Darfurianen / Palestijnen / Kabyliers / Basken / Koerden / Oeigoeren / Aboriginals / Zulu's etc etc. Maar dan verwacht ik van anderen op zijn minst dat ze het respect kunnen tonen om mij ook mijn zegje te laten doen.


Ps. En de waarheid staat altijd aan de kant van de onderdrukten, ongeacht etniciteit, geloof, moedertaal, geslacht of stam....

Heel veel Imazighen in Marokko zouden dat dolgraag willen hebben. Zelf eigen regio regering hebben, gekozen locale overheid, eigen zaken en geld beheren etc..

Daarom heeft de Marokkaanse overheid afgelopen maand nog het eerste echte onafhankelijke tijdschrift (sinds 1997 + hoofdredacteur Ali Lmrabat) van Marokko - Le Journal Hebdomadair - op slinkse wijze gesloten... Maar gelukkig ben ik niet op mijn achterhoofd gevallen....>

Official recounted Moroccan war crimes in Western Sahara

Moroccan official recounts war crimes in Western Sahara: Ould Rachid reveals violations committed by Army Officers against Sahrawi civilians “There are several persons [...], that is three or four army officers who committed what could be called war crimes against prisoners outside off the battlefield” and “many civilians who were thrown into the desert from helicopters or buried alive,” simply because they were Sahrawis.

The one breaking the taboo confirming that several Moroccan officers have committed serious war crimes in Western Sahara is not a known leader of the Polisario Front nor a Sahrawi pro-independence militant. The one who accuses high officers of the Royal Moroccan Army is Khalihenna Ould Rachid, the current president of CORCAS (the Royal Consultative Council for Saharan Affairs).

Ould Rachid is a famous pro-Moroccan Sahrawi who has many times been minister in the governments of [Moroccan] King Hassan II and has been one of the negotiators in the recent discussions with Polisario in Manhasset in the USA.

Ould Rachid did not make these declarations publicly but behind closed doors, during meetings of the Instance of Equity and Reconciliation (IER), an organization created by [Moroccan] King Mohammed VI to clarify the grave human rights violations perpetrated during the reign of Hassan II [1961-1999].

His testimony, recorded and transcribed in 2005, was not to be made public, but the Casablanca -based newspaper Al-Jarida Al-Oula has decided to publish them in their entirety, and announcing at the same time that it possesses other recordings in the same vein from high level Moroccan figures who testified in front of the same body.

Following these serious accusations, which concern a delicate subject in Morocco (the Western Sahara conflict) not normally discussed by the regime, the President of the [Moroccan] Consultative Council of Human Rights, an official body, was dispatched to block Al-Jarida Al-Oula from publishing these documents, not to refute them.

In effect, the publication of these documents in Morocco comes at a bad time. Since March 2007, Spain’s highest judicial body has asked judge Baltasar Garzón to inquire into accusations of “international crimes” committed by “32 Moroccan leaders and officers” in Western Sahara since 1975.

These accusations are the subject of a complaint deposited on 14 September 2006 before the highest Spanish court by several Spanish human rights associations, who estimate that 542 Western Saharans have disappeared since 1975.

Garzón has decided to ask Moroccan judicial authorities if these events have been investigated or if there are penal procedures under-way against the accused persons. But for the moment he has not received anything.

In Rabat, it is feared that many of the persons mentioned in the Spanish complaint, including many still occupying positions in the Moroccan army, have been named by Ould Rachid. For his part, Ali Anouzla, the Director of Al-Jarida Al-Oula, has announced that his newspaper will continue to publish the transcripts.
