Morocco Launches First Amazigh TV Channel

In a party organised yesterday in hotel Hassaan in Rabat, the Communication Minister and the government’s official spokesperson, Khalid Naciri, announced the launch of the Moroccan Amzigh TV. The launch of Amzigh TV is considered a very important event in the Moroccan audio-visual field. It is the eighth Moroccan TV channel that uses Tarifit, Tamazight, and Tashlhit (Berber languages) in 70% to 80% of its programmes. Moroccans have been waiting for this TV since the Ajdir royal speech in 2001 where King Mohamed promised to take into consideration the Amzigh cause and make it one of the State’s priorities.

Khalid Naciri stated that the Amazigh TV channel will be a remarkable audio-visual space that will consider carefully the cultural diversity and integrity of Moroccans. In his speech, Ahmed Boukous, the Director of the Royal Institution for Amazigh Culture, deemed that the new Moroccan TV is a “historical event” that will lead to a new vision towards the Moroccan identity of which Amazigh language, culture, and civilisation are parts of its development.

On the other hand, the Director of the new Amazigh TV channel, Mohamed Mammad, gave a presentation about the programmes that will be aiming at social, economic, cultural, and sport shows. Also the TV will air talk shows and debates of Amazigh scholars and members of the community. The Amazigh TV channel that required two years of technical and producing preparation will broadcast six hours everyday from Monday to Friday and ten hours during the weekend.

Vandaar dat we bij de recente aanvallen van de Marokkaanse makhzen op de echte onafhankelijke media in Marokko, de media dus die wel vertellen hoe de vork in de steel zit, onze stem moeten laten horen.

Laten we eventjes blij zijn met de komst van een Amazigh Tv. Op een latere stap, kunnen de activisten wat beter in gang leggen.

De koninklijke belofte van M6 om Amazigh TV op te richten dateert weer van oktober 2001 - hoe lang duurt het om met belastinggeld een tv station uit de grond te stampen? - tijdens de befaamde Dahir Ajdir. Als we deze productiviteit van de Marokkaanse overheid gaan doortrekken op het autonomievoorstel van M6 van afgelopen zondag dan kunnen we wel zo rond 2050 daadwerkelijk spreken van een "greater autonomy in the Rif"... >


Morocco to launch Amazigh channel

A new Moroccan television channel will broadcast entirely in Amazigh, satisfying a long-awaited demand by a significant percentage of the country’s citizens. The Moroccan government is finalising broadcast specifications to ensure that the national channel, which will air a range of general-interest programmes, can soon begin operations, Communications Minister Khalid Naciri announced before parliament last Wednesday (January 23rd).

A statement from the prime minister’s office said that "the government is prepared to make all the necessary arrangements for the creation of an Amazigh television channel." The finance and communications ministries will foot the bill, which is expected to come to 168m dirhams ($21.7m), the National Radio and Television Company (SNRT) will provide the channel’s headquarters and a significant share of the staff, and the Royal Institute for Amazigh Culture (IRCAM) will be responsible for training and also some producing.

Plans for the television station were shelved in November 2006 because of financial difficulties, but the government is now determined to get the Amazigh channel on the air. A committee made up of the SNRT, IRCAM and the Ministry of Communication worked on the production, technical equipment and human resources aspects of the project before it was taken over by the government.

According to the minister, programmes will be broadcast in all three dialects of Amazigh: Tamazight, Tarifit and Tachlhit. "This channel is intended to cater to the needs of a sizeable number of Moroccan viewers in the fields of information, culture, education and leisure," Naciri noted.

IRCAM says the aim is to bring Amazigh to an audience unfamiliar with the language.

The creation of a special channel devoted to Amazigh language and culture has stirred up interest from the Amazigh cultural movement. Even groups which do not support IRCAM are welcoming the move.

Brahim Baouche, a representative of the Amazigh Citizenship Network in Rabat, told Magharebia that all Amazighs are eagerly awaiting the new channel: "It’s a kind of reconciliation with the Amazigh as part of a move to promote cultural diversity. The request by the Amazigh movement to integrate Amazigh into the public media will finally come to fruition." While the two national channels have certainly made efforts to broadcast programmes in Amazigh, he said, the shows are scheduled during off-peak viewing hours.

Said Ameskane, a spokesman for the Popular Movement, which has made defending Amazigh language a key policy, said the channel will meet the expectations of people who do not speak Arabic. He worried, however, that the creation of the new channel would create a kind of separation. He believes that an alternative solution would have been to broadcast more Amazigh-language programmes on existing channels.

"We’re all part of one society," he said. "No Moroccan can say he is either 100% Arab or Amazigh. Morocco is made up of a cultural mix."

...Lors du lancement de « Tamazight », Mohamed Mamad, son directeur, a déclaré que la chaîne serait captée par voie numérique terrestre (TNT) sur tout le territoire national, ainsi que sur les satellites Nilesat (position 7° Ouest 11765 Mhz Horizontale) et Hotbird (position 13° Est 10872 Mhz Verticale)...

dat kan wel misschien kloppen, maar wees blij dat het volk nu een kanaal heeft om zich te onderscheiden, mensen kijken te veel MBC , Al Arabia etc etc.. Mensen krijgen na jaren deze zenders te kijken waanideeen, sommige imazighen zien zichzelf als arabier.

HAHA, ik vrees inderdaad dat het wel zo een kanaal gaat worden.
Maar goed, positief blijven :) ik probeer het te zien als een opstap, naar misschien wel een onafhankelijke zender (als een soort aanmoediging).

Waarom hebben de eerste 7 kanalen gewone numering en nu er 1 in het Tamazight is (70% dan) moet het Tamazight heten? bedoelen ze dat de andere vrijgesteld van het Tamazight zijn?

wat ook raar is, geen enkele land of volk vernoemt een kanaal naar de taal die het spreekt..

Hoe kun jij nu oproepen tot juigen als jij nog niets hebt kunnen zien? ben jij trouwens zo dom naief geworden dat je ondertussen niet weet hoe het komt dat er meer isisiyyen en icelhiyyen op tv zijn?

Ja . Isousiyen en Ishel7iyen en Ishrawien zijn meer op TV dan Irifiyen. Zowel op gebieden van: films, series, comedies, muziek, discussies, sport, cultuur, reclame, voorlichting, handvaardigheid, beroepen zijn zij te vertegenwoordigd en te  zien.
Ariffi ? bijnna nooit.

Dat is normaal Hadou, aangezien we in minderheid zijn in marokko. Riffijnen zijn ook minder krachtig qua deelname aan de Marokkaanse beschaving :D
