New archeological site discovered in Morocco

El Jadida, Jan. 20 - A new archeological site named "Maziren" and dating back to the 11th century, has been discovered recently near the Moroccan town of El Jadida (some 190 km South of Rabat).

The site is believed to be behind the name Mazagan, which a Portuguese fort built in the region at the outset of the 16th century, and know currently as El Jadida, according to the Morocco-Lusitanian research and studies center.


According to the El Jadida-based center, the discovery is part of an annual program of archeological prospecting led by the center since November 2005.
