Ahmed Essadki weet op een buitengewone wijze deze vormen van strijd te verbeelden. Gebruikmakend van krachtige verhalende zinnen weet Ahmed Essadki de lezer te raken. Deze bundel is een must voor elke poezie liefhebber.

Roel Otten’s Nederlandse vertaling van de Riffijnse gedichten is een die de kracht van Essadki’s woorden precies weet te vatten. Roel Otten’s beheersing van het Tarifit maar in grote mate ook zijn inlevingsvermogen in Riffijnse dichters heeft ervoor gezorgd dat de Nederlandse vertaling net zo krachtig is als het Riffijnse origineel.

Strijdkreet van de aarde….

David Hart publiceerde het boek in 1976 maar zijn veldwerk vond plaats in de jaren ‘50 en 60’s. Opmerkelijk aan David Hart is dat hij al op 25 jarige leeftijd begon met het veldwerk in de Rif. Zijn onderzoek was met name bijzonder doordat hij het Tamazight goed beheerste en zo het vertrouwen kon winnen van vele sleutel informanten in de Rif. Zijn werk bestaat dan ook voor een groot deel uit informatie vanuit de lokale gemeenschap.

‘The Aith Waryaghar of the Moroccan Rif ‘ biedt een schat aan informatie voor buitenstaanders maar in erg grote mate voor Riffijnen zelf. Doordat het onderzoek plaatsvond voordat de massamigratie en de arabisering in de Rif plaatsvond geeft het boek een inzicht in vele gebruiken die veelal al verloren zijn gegaan. David Hart heeft de Riffijnen een grote dienst bewezen doordat hij veel zaken op papier heeft gezet zodat deze voor toekomstige generaties bewaard zijn gebleven.

Hoewel David Hart oorspronkelijk Amerikaans was heeft hij een groot deel van zijn leven samen met zijn vrouw in Marokko en Spanje doorgebracht. In 2001 is hij op 74 jarige leeftijd in zijn woonplaats Malaga overleden.

De Nederlandse vertaling van ‘Aith Waryaghar of the Moroccan Rif’ is in gemeentebibliotheek Den Haag te leen. Dit is echter een vertaling van het halve boek.

Dit is dan ook een uniek werk geworden. Er is nauwelijks geschreven over het leven in het Rif begin jaren zestig, althans niet in roman vorm en zeker niet over de Riffijnse Amazigh vrouwen. Dit boek geeft dan ook een prachtige kijk op hoe de vrouwen toen leefden, over wat hun bezig hield en hun gevoelens en angsten. Inclusief 40 prachtige foto’s uit die tijd en een zelfgetekende kaart van het gebied.

Maar hoe moeilijk en hard het leven toen ook was ze was zij en haar man waren verknocht geraakt aan het gebied. Groot was hun schok dan ook toen ze in maart 1987 terugkeerden, na 22 jaar. Van hun geliefde Rif was niet veel meer over: migratie, armoede en de verbouwing van Kif (drugs) hadden het dagelijks leven verwoest. En de familie waarbij ze geleefd hadden had de nodige rampspoed gekend.

Ze eindigd haar boek dan ook met de zin: “In our older years, we prefer to remember “our Rif” as it was during the wonderful days of fieldwork.” En dankzij dit prachtige boek kunnen wij dit ook!

So I must have fallen asleep sitting up, and I awoke with a start to an urgent whisper:

“Munat, Munat! It’s time.” Rwazna’s dimpled face was close to mine: the henna ceremony! Everything rushed back into focus, and I jumped up and followed her into her mother’s room. It was lit by a single candle and the corners were dark and cavernous, while a charcoal brazier glowed red in the center of the room. As my eyes became accus­tomed to the flickering light, I discerned Muhand’s sisters, the elderly relatives-in-law and Khadduj crouched on a mattress near the wall. Rwazna and I crept across the room and sat on the end of the same mattress.

I was aware of chanting, and the gentle notes flowed over me while I looked at Arqiya. She sat on a chair with her eyes closed, looking very thin and frail in her simple cotton shift. Her bridesmaids, similarly dressed, sat at her feet in a circle. It was they who were singing, and Arqiya’s very special friend, Mimuna, was gently stroking her hand.

Arhimu, Mut and two other very old ladies whom I had not seen before squatted round the brazier. Just beyond them, on a small mattress, lay Muhand’s old, old grandmother. She was propped up by cushions but appeared to be asleep. The flush of the embers brought into relief those lined and wrinkled faces, protruding chins and sunken lips. Silently, and in turn, counter-clockwise, they stirred the henna mixture in an earthenware bowl. After a time, when the charcoal had died down, Mut balanced the bowl on the brazier and beckoned me over; I was hesitant, not wanting to intrude.

“Go on, it’s all right,” encouraged Rwazna, giving me a shove. The old ladies stopped stirring as I joined them and I would have preferred to remain a hidden and anonymous participant in a dark corner. However, Arhimu smiled and the two unknown women nodded and patted my hand as I crouched beside them. Arhimu, holding a long-handled wooden ladle, lifted two shelled hard-boiled eggs out of the henna, showed them to me and then plopped them back again. Bubbles broke on the surface of the mixture, releasing an aromatic scent of cloves and cinnamon. The eggs symbolized virility and fertility for the young couple.

Mimuna, the chief bridesmaid, slid over to the brazier and took the bowl of henna, placing it within the circle of the other maids of honor. The old women round the charcoal burner and those seated on the mattress now took up the refrain, while the bridesmaids cried and wailed as did Arqiya, louder than anyone, to indicate her sorrow at leaving home. Whatever one’s true feelings, this preliminary and outward show of grief is de rigueur from the departing daughter of the house.
