Al-Qaeda claims suicide bombing in Algeria's east

DUBAI — Al-Qaeda's branch in North Africa has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing against security forces in Algeria's eastern Kabylie region, the SITE monitoring group said. Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) claimed in a website posting that Sunday's attack on a security barracks at a village near the city of Tizi Ouzou had killed and wounded at least 36 people, SITE reported on Wednesday. AQIM's statement claimed that the attacker had rammed a truck laden with 600 kilogrammes (1,322 pounds) of explosives into a barracks of gendarmes, the monitoring group said. "The attack resulted so far in the death and injury of at least 36 apostates," the statement claimed, saying that it was in revenge for a militant who was killed in the same area in November 2007. It added that the attack also was "in revenge for the deaths of our Kabylie brothers and children" in the Kabylie town of Beni Douala, apparently referring to riots about a decade ago that were forcefully put down. Sunday's attack was not officially confirmed, but local residents had said that the watchman at the village's town hall, directly adjacent to the gendarmes building, was killed. The Sahara region has in recent years seen a dramatic increase in the activities of smugglers and militants linked to AQIM, which has claimed several attacks on foreigners. In June, AQIM claimed responsibility for killing 11 Algerian paramilitary police in the deadliest Islamist attack in the oil-rich state for a year. AQIM was founded in the late 1990s by radical Algerian Islamists who sought to overthrow the Algerian government and impose Islamic rule. The organisation established links with Al-Qaeda in 2006.
