A delegation of the Equity and Reconciliation Commission (IER), an official body set up last January to seek out-of-court settlement concerning past human rights abuses, paid Friday Jan. 14 a visit to the old detention center of Derb Moulay Cherif, in Casablanca.
The visit of the delegation, headed by the IER chairman Driss Benzekri, is part the program of investigations conducted by this body created to shed light on past human rights abuses that happened in Morocco between 1956 and 1999 and assess the magnitude and incidence of the violations.
The IER intends to locate and inspect illegal detention centers as well as those used for secret detention so as to make appropriate decisions on the centers, in cooperation with public powers.
The Friday field visit will be followed by other ones. The visits come in the wake of the Dec. 21 and 22 public audiences on past human rights violations, whose sessions are due to resume in the few coming days.
